I am 11,000% sure that my problem was fixed when I noticed that one of the bolts holding on my IAC valve was stripped. I went to Lowe’s, found a different bolt of the same width, but longer, got some nuts for it, screwed it in until I couldn’t twist it anymore, and now... Well, I let the car idle in park. It’s a significantly lower idle than I’m used to, but it’s constant. And earlier today, it would start doing that weird thing (see my previous post’s video) after about 3 minutes of idling. This time, I had it idling in my driveway for 20 minutes and nothing unusual happened. I just got back from a test drive and everything seems perfectly okay.

As such, I went ahead and slapped on my rallycross numbers for tomorrow, and I’m heading down there for it! Super excited!

Now, my next task will be getting the thing out from under my 0 key. Stupid Toshiba not giving me removable keys. This should not be more difficult than fixing my car, and yet it is.

What model Toshiba? All keys are removable.

Satellite L55-A5284. The keys do come off, but they don’t snap back on like normal ones do. I took another off once before and had to bend tiny parts with the tip of a pin in order to get it to lock back into place. Not worth the effort at all.

1.9L? I see it has a GT grill, but that looks like a Ford valve.

It is the 1.9, yeah. I just like the GT grille.

ahh ok. I was curious. Love the Mazda 1.8L the GT came with.

Yeah, I’d do a swap for one if the mounts were the same, but apparently it’s way more work than it’s worth.

I used to work in a computer shop, I suggest using an old paintbrush or toothbrush to clean under the keys.

I also used to replace keyboard keys often, you always put the lower scissor clips or plastic retainer on first, snap the actual key on last. When you replace enough of them, it’s just seconds to get them on or off.

Just a patience game really....

Nice job! Just a stripped bolt on the idle control valve?

Seems to be! It’s possible that something else will come up later, and I do still want to replace the TPS and O2 sensor eventually, just because, so it’ll probably run a lot better after that. But it does seem that it’s not stalling anymore, and that’s just what I was hoping for.

Yeah, I’m hoping it’ll be lots of fun. I’m driving 2.5 hours out to it, so it better be.

just get the brackets and mounts off the donor car and it should drop right in. All the threaded holes are there. Ford didn’t make two separate bodies.

Huh, that must be where the confusion comes from; I didn’t really consider swapping out the mounts as well.

Do you know if they’re specific to Escorts or if I could use mounts from any car with a Mazda BP engine? If I’m going to do a swap, I might as well go all the way and get a BP-T. My cousin’s boyfriend lives in Australia, so I could even get them to bring me some of the cosmetic parts to do a full Laser TX3 conversion to keep the car legal for SCCA stock classes, assuming it’s okay to keep it LHD...

I’m not as familiar with the laser TX3. I do know the AWD mounts are a bit different as they used a different platform slightly.

Any escort GT or tracer LTS or Escort LX-E should work. As far as protege to escort I’m not as sure. Clubprotege.com forums has a pretty extensive knowledge base. I’ve been out of the game for almost 5 years so I’m a little rusty.

Alright, thanks anyway! I probably won’t be doing any swap any time soon, though, as my engine is still running strong, but it’s cool to know it should work!
